We all have that favorite shirt that faded after two washes or a sweater that shrank. The problem usually isn’t the quality of the clothes, but how we wash them. Here is how to keep your wardrobe looking new for years.
1. Read the Label It sounds boring, but the tag inside your shirt tells you everything. If it says “Dry Clean Only,” do not put it in the washing machine. If it says “Cold Wash,” hot water will damage the fabric.
2. Wash Less Often Jeans and jackets do not need to be washed after every single use. Washing denim too often breaks down the fibers and fades the indigo dye. Spot clean small stains instead of washing the whole garment.
3. Inside Out is the Secret Always turn your t-shirts and dark pants inside out before washing. This prevents the outer surface from rubbing against other clothes, which causes pilling (those tiny fabric balls) and color fading.
4. Air Dry When Possible The high heat of a dryer is the enemy of elastic and cotton. In Nepal, we are lucky to have plenty of sunshine. Line drying your clothes is not only free but also gentler on fabrics. However, avoid direct sunlight for dark clothes to prevent fading.
